Intensional definitions

Intensional definitions indicate the superordinate concept, either inmediately above or at a higher level. For example: A pencil case is a container designed to hold and carry pencils and other writing instruments.

Extensional definitions

Extensional definitions consists of a list of subordinate concepts. For example: Theatened species are critically endangered species, endangered species or vulnarable species. Extensional definitions are only to be used whe intensional definitions are difficult to elaborate and the number of subordinate concepts to be enumerated is limited.
